Sanding Sponge: A Model Maker’s Companion

2024.03.29

Sanding sponges are versatile tools used in both plastic model making and 3D printing post-processing. Here’s how they can be utilized in each context:

Plastic Model Making:

  • Removing Blemishes: Sanding sponges help remove unwanted blemishes from plastic models, such as rough areas from where parts connected to the parts tree or uneven joints between parts.
  • Smoothing Surfaces: They are used to even out surfaces, making them smooth for painting or further detailing.
  • Wet Sanding: Some modelers prefer wet sanding, which reduces heat and prevents clogging of the sanding sponge, especially when working with softened plastic or paint.

3D Printing Post-Processing:

  • Support Removal: After printing, sanding sponges can smooth out the areas where supports were attached to the model.
  • Surface Finishing: They help in achieving a finer finish on the print surface, especially after using coarser grit sandpaper.
  • Flexibility: Sanding sponges can conform to various shapes, making them ideal for sanding curved or detailed surfaces.

In both applications, sanding sponges are valued for their ability to provide a uniform finish and reach areas that might be difficult with traditional sandpaper. Remember to use them with appropriate grit levels, starting from coarser to finer, to achieve the best results.
